Things to Do in Salzburg

The 5 Best Boat Tours in Salzburg in 2026

Most people explore Salzburg on foot. The Old Town is compact, the main sights are close together, and the Salzach River runs straight through the centre. A boat tour in Salzburg is therefore not an absolute must, but it is a nice change of pace if you want to see the city from a different perspective.

There are not that many traditional Salzburg river cruises, but the tours that do exist are surprisingly varied. You can take a short sightseeing cruise on the Salzach River, combine a boat trip with Hellbrunn Palace, or even board an amphibious vehicle that drives through Salzburg before entering the river. There are also evening packages combining a river cruise with dinner and a Mozart concert at Hohensalzburg Fortress.

If I could choose only one, I would take the classic Salzach River cruise. For families or anyone with half a day to spare, however, there are better options.

Which Salzburg Boat Tour Should You Choose?

If you are not sure which tour to pick, these are my quick recommendations:

  • Best overall: Salzach River Boat Ride
  • Best half-day trip: Boat Ride to Hellbrunn Palace
  • Best with kids: Amphibious Splash Tour
  • Best complete evening: River Cruise, Dinner & Fortress Concert
  • Best for classical music fans: River Cruise & Best of Mozart Fortress Concert

Best Boat Tours in Salzburg in 2026

1 Salzach River Boat Ride – Best Overall

The classic boat ride on the Salzach River is the Salzburg boat tour I would recommend to most first-time visitors.

It starts right in the city centre and takes around 40 minutes. That means you do not have to sacrifice half a day and can easily fit the cruise between the Old Town, Mirabell Gardens and Hohensalzburg Fortress.

The route follows the Salzach south before returning to the city centre. In the centre, you mainly see the buildings lining the river. As the boat continues south, the surroundings become greener and the mountain scenery becomes more prominent.

What you should not expect is a sightseeing cruise where a famous landmark appears directly beside the river every few minutes. Salzburg simply is not built that way. You will get much better views of the fortress, cathedral and most other major attractions while walking through the city.

That said, I actually like the tour because it is short. Forty minutes on the water is enough to break up a long day of sightseeing without taking over your itinerary.

Best for: First-time visitors, couples and families
Duration: approx. 40 minutes
Departure: Marko-Feingold-Steg in Salzburg Old Town

2 Boat Ride to Hellbrunn Palace – Best Half-Day Trip

If you already plan to visit Hellbrunn Palace, I would choose this combination instead of the standard Salzburg river cruise.

The trip starts with a boat ride along the Salzach. After reaching the Hellbrunn landing stage, you continue by historic London double-decker bus. The bus ride to the palace itself takes only a few minutes. Depending on the option you book, the famous Trick Fountains and a visit to Hellbrunn Palace are also included.

With children, I find this much more varied than spending 40 minutes exclusively on the boat. You get the cruise, the bus ride, the palace grounds and the Trick Fountains in one outing.

The downside is the fixed schedule. If you would rather spend an extra hour in the palace gardens, stop for lunch whenever you feel like it or explore Hellbrunn entirely at your own pace, going independently gives you more freedom.

Still, this is my favourite half-day option on the list, particularly if Hellbrunn Palace is already part of your Salzburg itinerary.

Best for: Families, couples and first-time visitors
Duration: around 2.5 hours, depending on the option
Highlight: Salzach boat ride + Hellbrunn Palace + Trick Fountains

3 Amphibious Splash Tour – Best Salzburg Boat Tour with Kids

The Amphibious Splash Tour is probably the most unusual way to experience Salzburg from the water.

You board an amphibious vehicle that initially drives through the city like a normal sightseeing bus. Then, instead of simply continuing to the next attraction, it enters the Salzach River.

From that point on, your city tour becomes a boat tour.

It is obviously more touristy than a quiet river cruise. If you mainly want to sit back and enjoy the landscape, I would choose the standard Salzach boat ride instead.

With children, however, the calculation is different. Driving a bus-like vehicle straight into the river is simply more memorable than a conventional sightseeing cruise. The tour also combines sightseeing on land with time on the Salzach.

I would recommend it mainly to families. As a couple without children, it would not be my first choice.

Best for: Families and travellers looking for something unusual
Duration: approx. 1.5 hours
Special feature: City sightseeing and a boat tour in the same vehicle

4 River Cruise, Dinner & Fortress Concert – Best for a Full Evening in Salzburg

I would not really describe this as just a Salzburg boat tour.

The Salzach River cruise is only the first part of the evening. Afterwards, you make your way up to Hohensalzburg Fortress, where dinner is followed by a classical concert.

If this is your first visit to Salzburg and you only have one or two evenings in the city, you can cover quite a lot in one go: a river cruise, the fortress, panoramic views, dinner and classical music.

Personally, I find that almost a little too much packed into one package. Dinner also means following a fixed schedule rather than choosing your own restaurant somewhere in the Old Town.

I therefore would not book this tour for the river cruise alone. The first two tours are better choices for that. The package makes much more sense if a concert at Hohensalzburg Fortress is already something you want to do.

Best for: Couples, first-time visitors and classical music fans
Combination: Salzach River cruise + dinner + fortress concert

5 River Cruise & Best of Mozart Fortress Concert – Better Without the Set Dinner

I prefer this option slightly to number four if the concert is your main reason for booking.

You start with a Salzach River cruise and later head up to Hohensalzburg Fortress for the Best of Mozart Fortress Concert.

The advantage is that you remain flexible when it comes to food. In Salzburg, I would rather choose my own restaurant than automatically commit to a dinner package.

I still would not book this purely for the boat ride. The cruise is only one part of the evening. But if you already want to see a Mozart concert at the fortress, combining the two makes sense.

Best for: Couples, Mozart fans and classical music beginners
Combination: Salzach River cruise + Hohensalzburg Fortress + Mozart concert

Which Is the Best Boat Tour in Salzburg?

For most visitors, I think the classic Salzach River boat ride is the best choice. It takes only around 40 minutes, leaves from the Old Town and requires very little planning.

If you have more time, I would personally choose the boat trip to Hellbrunn Palace instead. You simply get more variety from the experience.

Travelling with children? The Amphibious Splash Tour is probably more entertaining than either of them.

I would only choose one of the fortress concert packages if the concert itself is already on your Salzburg to-do list.

Is a Salzburg River Cruise Worth It?

Yes, but I would not put it among the absolute must-do attractions in Salzburg.

The city is best explored on foot. A Salzburg sightseeing cruise is more about seeing the city and surrounding landscape from another angle and taking a short break from churches, museums and crowded Old Town streets.

That is exactly why the 40-minute cruise works quite well. You do not lose two or three hours of your day, but still experience a side of Salzburg many visitors miss.

If you only have one day in Salzburg and it is your first visit, however, I would prioritise the Old Town and Hohensalzburg Fortress.

Where Do Salzburg Boat Tours Depart From?

Most Salzburg boat tours depart from Marko-Feingold-Steg at Franz-Josef-Kai 1a, 5020 Salzburg, directly in the Old Town. The landing stage is on the Salzach opposite Hotel Sacher and within easy walking distance of Getreidegasse and the historic centre.

The regular Salzach cruise, the Hellbrunn boat trip, the Amphibious Splash Tour and the cruise-and-concert packages all start in this area.

The Hellbrunn tour is slightly different. The boat continues to a separate landing stage near Hellbrunn, where passengers transfer to a historic double-decker bus for the short journey to the palace.

Address: Franz-Josef-Kai 1a, 5020 Salzburg
Pier: Marko-Feingold-Steg
Coordinates: 47°48’04.6″N, 13°02’30.1″E

  3. Amphibious Splash Tour – best with kids
  4. River Cruise, Dinner & Fortress Concert – best complete evening
  5. River Cruise & Best of Mozart Fortress Concert – best for classical music fans

FAQ About Boat Tours in Salzburg

How long is the Salzburg river cruise?

The standard Salzach River cruise takes around 40 minutes. The Hellbrunn trip and Amphibious Splash Tour take considerably longer.

What is the best Salzburg boat tour for families with children?

I would look at the Amphibious Splash Tour first. The transition from road vehicle to boat makes it more entertaining than a normal river cruise. The Hellbrunn trip is another good family option, especially if you want to visit the Trick Fountains.

Can you take a boat from Salzburg to Hellbrunn Palace?

Partly. The boat travels along the Salzach to a landing stage near Hellbrunn, but it does not dock directly outside the palace. From the river, a historic double-decker bus takes passengers to Hellbrunn Palace.

Is there a boat tour to Hohensalzburg Fortress?

Not directly. Several packages combine a Salzach River cruise with a later visit to Hohensalzburg Fortress, but the boat itself does not travel to the fortress.

Do I need to book Salzburg boat tours in advance?

Not necessarily for every departure. However, advance booking is sensible on weekends, during the main summer season and for tours with limited capacity, particularly the Amphibious Splash Tour and the concert packages.

Do Salzburg river cruises run in the rain?

Light rain does not automatically mean cancellation. Water levels and severe weather are more important. Cruises can be changed or cancelled when conditions on the Salzach are unsuitable.

When do boat tours run in Salzburg?

Salzburg boat cruises operate seasonally, mainly from spring until autumn. Individual tours have their own schedules and departure days, so it is worth checking availability for your travel date.
